Lemon Themed Sensory Activities

Spring has sprung and before we know it, the summer sunshine will make it’s debut! Bring some of those bright and cheery vibes into your own classroom with these 3 fun and easy sensory based activities!

Lemon Scented Sensory Rice Bin

Lemony scented rice makes for a rich and immersive sensory bin! Use this activity as a center or small groups project. Measure one cup of rice into a container that preferably has a lid. Add one teaspoon of lemon juice. Add desired amount of food coloring. Spread the rice onto paper towels on a flat surface like a table. Allow the lemon juice to dry for at least 30 minutes before exploration. Keep the container closed while not in use to preserve scent for longer.

Lemon Juice Coin Polishing

Gather an assortment of coins. WARNING: choking hazard. Do not leave small children unattended with coins. Always supervise children under the age of 6 with small parts. This activity can be done in small groups or as a supervised learning center. For younger children discuss the differences in color, shape, and size between pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. For older children, discuss how many cents each is worth. Which coins are the brightest? The dullest? Collect white rags, washcloths, or pieces of old fabric like a t-shirt or felt. Give children one coin to start, placing the coins on a tray or plate to contain juice. Take pictures of the coins “before”. What will the lemon juice do to the coins? Will it change? Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a small bowl or cup. Using a pipette or water dropper, drop a few drops of juice onto the childrens coins, and let the juice sit for 15 minutes or more. Children can then  work to polish the coins using paper towel, q-tips, rags, felt, or old cloth. Take pictures of the “after” results. Compare and discuss. Bonus experiment: soak a coin overnight in lemon juice, recording before and after results.

Lemonade Stand Sensory Soup

Use any small or medium sized bin, or water table you have on hand. Fill the bin with water, leftover lemon peels or any citrus fruit parts, real ice cubes (optional) or any pretend ice cubes (white legos or building blocks) on hand.  Add everything water and mix it up to create pretend “lemonade”! Add scoopers, cups, spoons, strainers for added fun!
